Throwback Thursday so I get a good excuse to write about anything I want. So lets have some Massive Attack and the prodigious, effortlessly timeless masterpiece that is ‘Unfinished Sympathy’.
Released in 1991 on the trios début album ‘Blue Lines’ the track cemented the groups place in the newly emerging Trip Hop scene and set the standard that even today is held in the genre.
The track incorporates many different musical elements into it such drum & beat programming and vocal & percussion sampling and was co produced by the group and Jonny Dollar. The tracks memorable, hair tingling string section was arranged by composer Will Malone and recorded live. But perhaps the most memorable part of the track for a lot of people would have been the astoundingly striking, powerful and hauntingly beautiful vocals of British Soul singer Shara Nelson.
Even today, as I sit here listening to it for probably the 1000th time, it evokes strong emotion. It’s calm and relaxed yet unerving and powerful. The track is a perfectly constructed instrument for reaching into the soul and making you think. It sucks you in, grabs hold and gets inside. It is an unforgettable piece of music, a true classic, and like I said, an effortlessly timeless masterpiece. Enjoy!!
