The duo is made up of two of Manchester’s well known Hip Hop contributors. The indomitable Pete Obsolete – who as well as penning lyrics and reciting rhymes is also a noted designer with his own fashion label ‘Obsolete Clothing’ – is joined by none other than Golden Egg boss Seymour. Golden Egg is Manchester’s regular underground Hip Hop event – and along with running the night, Seymours been dropping EP’s like a mad man including the rather good ‘Brutally Honest’ spoken word EP.
The beat construction comes courtesy of one OBA’s favourite producers and one of Manchester’s if not the UK’s most up and coming production talents – Mankub of Room 2 Records fame. The beat is an honest, soulful construction of Boombap style Hip Hop drums and soft keys infused with a Southern Bluegrass flavour. It’s casual and nostalgic and fits the rapping style of the two MC’s perfectly.
Both rappers tackle a similar subject material – one of frustration and annoyance over the ever more prominent material world. The lack of originality and mass conformity in general society and the general grievances that come from moving through life. The lyrics are intelligent and penmanship shows heart as well as mind. Both rappers also have a similar flow and tone – however, both still carry a distinct flavour in their delivery, separating one from the other. Pete’s got a definite uniqueness to his voice, an almost country drawl enthused within a Manc outer that bounces off Seymours lighter, pace changing flow. It’s a vocal pairing that works very well!
The video – shot by Michael Copp, perfectly captures the relaxed yet poignant essence of the track and was filmed on location at Mary & Archie’s Manchester.
There is much more on the way from Deadkings including more of the visual front and the forthcoming EP to be released on the newly formed Egg Collective label. Watch this space – but for now, kick back, watch the video below and get acquainted with Manchester newest Hip Hop collective. Enjoy!
